No one ever said product development is easy. Medical device development in particular is a very complex and variable process with threats to success emerging at many points along the way. However, there are components you can put in place to ensure the smoothest path possible.
1. Wait Until the Technology is Really Ready
A common mistake is to move a technology out of research and into development before it is ready. Having a technology working on the bench is far different than proving it can be commer...

On April 28, 10 volunteers from Stratos, along with hundreds across the region, rolled up their sleeves to tranform homes for those in need. The team met up with a group from Pemco at a home in North Seattle to transform a yard and sheetrock a bathroom, among many other tasks. It was a great teambuilding experience for Stratos and a very worthwhile endeavor for our community. We look forward to our next opportunity to support Rebuilding Together Seattle! Visit http://www.rtseattle.org/ to find out what this great program is all about, and visit our Facebook page to see photos from the ev...

The following article was published in MDDI's "State of Medtech" issue, May 2012.The landscape of healthcare is changing, and it’s changing at a pace that many companies are struggling to keep up with. Gone are the days when we create a device, match it to market research and reimbursement norms, and expect that the healthcare system will adopt it. Patients are now consumers—not simply recipients of care that is prescribed by their physicians. Are you ready to take a fresh look at your innovation process and take steps to meet the new market demands of the healthcare consumers wh...

The following article was published on MDDI's Device Talk blog in April 2012.These days, nearly every electronic medical device also has an embedded software component. It can be daunting when your software background is limited and you’re responsible for a product with a large software element. Software efforts are notoriously difficult to manage—many projects’ budgets and schedules have spiraled out of control because the software development effort took much longer than expected.
While it’s easy to see progress as mechanical and electrical engineers work—...

Here’s an interesting snippet from an interview with Harvard Business School’s Clayton Christensen regarding the way experiences during childhood can lead to the development of a creative mind.
Encouraging a child’s curiosity and confidence is a hugely important factor in the child becoming innovative and leading a successful life. The best way to teach innovation is to embody it—allow your child to participate as you repair things in the home, and they’ll learn the critical thought processes for dismantling, repairing and improving products, processes and id...

The following article was published by MX magazine in Februry 2012.Effective communication is essential for minimizing roadblocks during product development and for speeding the finished product to market. Members of a development team who listen to each other and truly understand one another will smooth the product development process. This is no easy feat. For a team with difficulties communicating, any bumps in the road can be alarming and unsettling. Teams with poor communication practices typically do not have a clear view of the path forward and are unable to make and execute an accurate...

The following article was published on MDDI's Device Talk blog in Feburary 2012.Everybody knows that they are supposed to eat 4-5 servings of fruit and vegetables per day, but how many people actually do it? Some of us try, most of us fail, and we tell ourselves we’ll do it right in the future. There is an analogy in product development that is very similar – building solid requirements prior to development. They are the vitamins and fiber that lead to a healthy product! Anyone who has been building products recognizes the need for a well-written product requirements document (PR...
