Sean MacLeod

President
With 18 years of experience as a business manager and engineer he is an experienced technology development practitioner, an aggressive competitor in the medical and electronics industries, and an evangelist of progressive product management practices.

He currently manages company financial performance, establishes new client relationships, and continues to work with companies of all sizes to set new product to market strategies. Sean maintains corporate business relationships with a wide variety of clients from small unknown venture funded start-ups to large multi-nationals including Abbott Laboratories, Agilent Technologies, Datascope, Microsoft, Novo Nordisk, Intel, Welch Allyn, Tektronix, Cardinal Healthcare, and Medtronic.

Mr. MacLeod is Chairman of the Stratos Product Development Board, an active member of the American Electronics Association (AEA) Washington Executive Committee, the Washington Biotechnology and Biomedical Association (WBBA), and several national entrepreneurial networks. He holds a Bachelors Degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst and regularly lectures for MBA and Engineering programs including those at the University of Washington, the University of Oregon, and the Rochester Institute of Technology. Prior to joining Stratos in 1994, he was a consultant in the aerospace industry and an engineer with United Technologies.



Mike Nelson

VP/Industrial Design
Michael has 31 years of experience and is the co-founder of Stratos. He has been granted numerous national and international design awards that span a wide range of markets from high-volume consumer to medical products. He has over 30 US Design and Utility patents, and his most recent awards include 2008 Medical Design Excellence Award Winner, 2008 IDEA Winner, and 2008 Good Design Winner. Michael currently sits on the board of managers at Stratos and directs its Industrial Design Group. Michael also has significant design experience in human factors, user experience design, prototyping, materials and process, and transitioning conceptual designs into cost-effective, manufactured products. During Michael’s 20 years with Stratos his clients have included Microsoft, Intel, Apple, Fluke, Hewlett-Packard, Tektronix, Cardinal Health, Abbott Laboratories, Philips Healthcare, Datascope, Medtronics, Sonosite, Tyco Healthcare, Kensey-Nash, Micronics, Aradigm, Welch-Allyn, Codonics, NW Marine Technologies, SportBrain, and Nike. Prior to joining Stratos, he was employed at the Fluke Corporation and was responsible for the Industrial Design of the handheld multimeter line of products which continue to be the industry gold standard for test and measurement with respect to ruggedized, portable, low cost multimeters. Michael has a BFA from the University of Washington. He has been longstanding member of the University of Washington Industrial Design Advisory Board.



Mike Curneen

VP Operations
Over 20 years of engineering and organizational experience. As one of the original founders of the company, his passion is the art and science of product development. His experience in the industry includes work for companies involved in the manufacture of barcode technology, opto-electronics, commercial photo processing systems, electronic test and measurement equipment, commercial and residential lighting and consumer products. Prior to joining Stratos in 1988, he was mechanical engineering supervisor of the handheld equipment division at the Fluke Corporation. He attended the Burnley School of Professional Art and University of Washington. Since joining Stratos he has been teaching and practicing leadership and communication skills as they relate to the organizational development of the company and better client relations.



John Havard

VP/Engineering
21 years of experience in engineering and product design. John rejoined Stratos in 2007 after co-founding EnVision Instruments in 2003, where he led the development of two wireless optical instruments for the biotech industry as Director of Engineering. He also filled the roles of product architect and lead designer, and set up contract manufacturing and production testing. He became Chief Engineer for Finesse Solutions after EnVision was acquired and merged into Finesse in 2005. During his previous 10-year tenure at Stratos, John was a Sr. Design Engineer and worked on products for clients ranging from Apple Computer and Hewlett Packard to startups including Therus and Sportbrain. His roles included electrical designer, technical lead, and project manager. Prior to joining Stratos initially, he worked as an engineer at Applied Microsystems and Loral Electronics Systems. John is an inventor on three US patents with another pending. He holds Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Engineering and Master of Engineering degrees from Dartmouth College.



Tom Kadavy

Director, Medical Technology
20 years experience in the development, manufacture, and commercialization of technology-based products. Most recently, Senior Director of Engineering with Boston Scientific Corporation, formerly Heart Technology, Inc. Responsible for leading an organization which contributed the process development, new product introduction, and manufacturing systems required to rapidly grow the company from $3M to over $120M in annual revenues. Prior to BSC, co-founder and Vice President of Engineering of the Soma Dynamics Corp., which developed medical devices for the orthopedic rehabilitation market. Consulted to a number of technology companies in varied industries, contributing business strategy and original designs, including a design which garnered the R&D 100 award, also holds four United States patents, with six pending.



Mark Freeman

VP, Electrical Engineering
24 years as a design engineer and project manager. Product experience covers low-cost high volume digital multimeters, high-speed microprocessor emulators, portable computer products, and motion control electronics. Technical skills include ASIC design, embedded software development, and design for electromagnetic compatibility (EMC). Previously worked as design engineer and product manager at Fluke Corporation and Applied Microsystems.



Dick Burger

COO
Over 20 years of the marketing, development and manufacturing sides of product development. This well-rounded view of process and breadth of experience allows Burger to leverage multi-disciplinary technical teams and bring the best products possible to market. A graduate of the Stanford Executive Institute and the Covey Leadership Center, he is an advisor to Central Washington University and Pierce College’s technical programs. Burger is also a co-chair of the Washington Chapter of the American Electronic Association’s Engineering Network and the Engineering Representative on the AEA Cross-Functional Committee. His previous positions include Design Engineer, Project Manager, Manufacturing and Test Engineering Manager and Product Development Engineering Manager of the Industrial Group and General Manager for Fluke Corporation’s Microelectronics Organization (FMO).

Allan Stephan

CEO
Over 20 years of business and technology development experience. Allan Stephan, founder and CEO of Stratos, is a well-rounded combination of entrepreneur, competitor and advisor. He has incubated companies in several markets including life science, medical devices, healthcare and computing. He has provided funding, facilities, and engineering support as well as holding leadership positions in each venture. Stephan was the founder, CEO and chairman of Inroad, a wearable computer company sold to Voxware in 2000 and Enroute Media, a media delivery company that unified high demography with content that could be optimized for location. He also co-founded Amnis, Inc., an emerging biotechnology company focused on innovative advancements in the imaging of biological cells in flow.

Stephan is currently expanding this commitment to emerging technologies with The Stratos Group®, a company dedicated to the conversion of science and technology into commercial products for the advancement of mankind and the protection of the environment.

From 2001-2008 Stephan was chairman of the board for Micronics, Inc., a microfluidics products and service provider. He is a former board member of Sound Health and the Technology in Education Program (TIE) as well as a former advisory board member for Washington’s Science and Math Initiative (NSF funded) and the Washington Technology Center (WTC). Stephan’s prior experience includes design and engineering management and 5 years with the Fluke Corporation where he was Program Manager and Senior Mechanical Engineer for high volume hand-held and rugged professional instrumentation. In addition, he was part of a small team of experts that were responsible for investigating new market opportunities and their supporting technologies for Fluke.

He holds a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Washington.



Harold Kawaguchi

Chairman
Harold H. Kawaguchi has over 25 years experience in working with emerging growth companies. He is currently Chairman of Stratos Product Development L.L.C., a privately held technology development company. He sits on the board of Therus Corporation, a medical device company, and is an advisory board member for the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Washington. He is a partner with Douglas Varey (UW, Industrial Design 1982) in Manifesto, a lighting products company.

Kawaguchi’s past experience includes co-founder and senior vice-president of Physio-Control Corporation, where he saw The Company through its growth years to its merger with Eli Lilly and Company. He was past Chairman of the Washington Chapter of the American Electronics Association, past board member of Pacer Corporation, Wall Data, Red Hook Brewery, Ekos Corporation, and Active Voice. With the exception of Ekos, all other companies had successful IPOs and were listed on the NASD. Kawaguchi also was a general partner in Trinus Partners, a seed venture fund, and formerly Associate Professor, Industrial Design at the University of Washington.

Kawaguchi has been an active member of the cultural community as a past board member of The Seattle Repertory Theatre, The Empty Space Theatre, The Henry Art Gallery, and KCTS, Public Television.

He holds a BA in Industrial Design and a MFA from the University of Washington.



Mark Kokoris

Chief Science Officer
16+ years of experience working on the cutting edge of biotechnology. Mr. Kokoris’s passion is to conceive and develop innovative and transforming technologies. As a cofounder and Chief Science Officer of Stratos Genomics, he helped to conceive the SBX ™ technology, which the company will use to pursue its objective of achieving the “$1,000 genome”. In 2003, he founded the biotechnology consulting firm BioCaptus, LLC where his experience in the fields of high throughput genomics, molecular diagnostics, protein engineering, and microfluidics have been utilized by clients to develop a broad range of technologies and applications. BioCaptus’ clients include QIAGEN GmbH, Columbia University, BioServe Biotechnologies, Welch Allyn, and Micronics, Inc. Prior to forming BioCaptus, Mr. Kokoris was the Director of Services and Technology for QIAGEN Genomics, Inc. He was responsible for QGI’s Genotyping, Sequencing, and Isolation services efforts as well as all aspects of technology and process development. As one of the founding members of Rapigene, he played a key role in the development of the Cleavable Mass Spec Tag (CMST) technology and in establishing the company’s high-throughput genotyping facility. Other prior experience includes extensive work in the field of protein engineering. Mr. Kokoris holds a B.S. in Biochemistry from the University of California, Davis.



Bob McRuer, Ph.D.

Chief Technical Officer
12+ years of optical/electro optical design and project management experience. Dr. McRuer’s product development experience includes head-mounted displays, optical data storage, fiber-based nondestructive testing and fiber modulators. McRuer has expertise in plastic optics manufacturing, optomechanical design, diffractive/micro optics, illumination, and microdisplays. Previous positions include Senior Optical Engineer at Virtual IO and IOptics. He holds both a Doctor of Electrical Engineering degree and Master of Electrical Engineering degree from Stanford.
