Stratos collaborated in the creation of a dual platform, first market offering that brings high-end computational performance out of the server room, into the office and laboratory environment. Stratos initially engaged Orion to fully understand the user, marketing, technical, and business objectives to find design opportunities and balance synergies between the two product offerings. Common aesthetic elements and a product family language were developed to achieve these objectives. The design communicates the performance and value positioning of the product while maintaining a user-friendly language providing a vehicle to launch the Orion Multisystems brand.
The mechanical architecture for each product was designed with common features to accommodate critical thermal management aspects as well as accomplish Design for Excellence (DFX) goals. Aggressive start-up development timelines also required focused attention to getting the design right the first time. Multiple Design and Engineering verification prototypes were built and evaluated for thermal stability as predicted with feasibility Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) modeling. Final designs were released for manufacturing on time and within budget for market introduction in August 2004.
